Daryl Hannah might have to stay overnight in a local jail in Texas. The Elle Driver of "Kill Bill"
movie series was detained after doing a protest against TransCanada's
construction of the Keystone XL pipeline to transfer crude oil from
Canada to the Gulf Coast for fear of air pollution.
Hannah and 78-year-old Eleanor Fairchild, whose Winnsboro farm fell
along the construction route, stood in front of the company's heavy
equipment in an attempt to stop the $7 billion project. The actress and
the landowner were taken to Wood County Jail on suspicion of criminal
trespassing.
"It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have
chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,"
David Dodson, TransCanada's representative, told The Associated Press.
He said the protesters were "putting their own safety and the safety of
others at risk."
Hannah's manager Paul Bassis said there was "a strong indication" that
Hannah and Eleanor would stay overnight in jail. "The streets of
Winnsboro will be much safer tonight now that they've gotten that
78-year-old great grandmother off the streets," he said in sarcasm.
Last year, Hannah was taken into custody
after voicing her opposition to the building of the Keystone XL
pipeline in front of the White House. "Sometimes it's necessary to
sacrifice your freedom for a greater freedom. And we want to be free
from the horrible death and destruction that fossil fuels cause, and
have a clean energy future," she said back then.
