Armie Hammer Reportedly Back as Top Pick to Play Batman in 'Justice League'

Armie Hammer

Could Armie Hammer end up playing Batman in Warner Bros. Pictures' long-gestating "Justice League" movie after all? An insider reveals to Moviehole that the 26-year-old actor is currently "back to WB's radar" to star as the Caped Crusader in the DC superhero ensemble movie.

It is said that Warners sees Hammer as a hot commodity following his acting stints in such films as "The Social Network", "Mirror Mirror" and also upcoming "The Lone Ranger". After Christian Bale decided to hang up his Batman getup and with the studio's plan to reintroduce a younger version of the Gotham hero in "JLA", Hammer is said to be back on the top of the studio's wishlist.

Should the rumor be true and the "J. Edgar" actor really join the highly-anticipated DC project, his Caped Crusader role will likely be restricted only to the "JLA" universe. "The Batman in this movie might only be used in Justice League movies," says a source.

Hammer was first reported to be eyed to play Batman a few years ago when George Miller was still on board as the director. "We had gotten a long way into pre-production," the L.A.-born thesp recently told MTV News when discussing how he once got approached for the coveted part.

"We were about to start shooting when the writer's strike happened at the end of 2007, and then the Australian government denied a 40% tax rebate that they thought they were going to have, so a lot of things just when wrong," he explained why the initial Australia-set plan for "JLA" was doomed.

"It's unfortunate because the amount of work that was already done - I mean, they had finished pre-production and they were a couple of days away from starting to shoot, so it's a shame that nobody got to see all of the work that got put into it," he continued.

Apart from Hammer, some other Hollywood hunks were previously rumored for the part of Batman in the "JLA" gig. They included "John Carter" star Taylor Kitsch as well as Joseph Gordon-Levitt who played Robin in "The Dark Knight Rises".

"Justice League" will see DC's most famous superheroes, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Flash and more, uniting to fight evil forces. The latest script is written by "Gangster Squad" scribe Will Beal, who replaced previous screenwriters Kieran and Michele Mulroney.
