'The Walking Dead' Season 3 Premiere Breaks Ratings Records

The Walking Dead" shattered records with its third season premiere. The recently-aired episode titled "Seed" delivered 10.9 million viewers for its first telecast, making it the most-watched drama series telecast in basic cable history.

The viewership grew more than 50% from October 2011 when 7.3 million viewers tuned in the show's second season premiere. When the encore telecast is accounted, the total viewer number for the season 3 premiere rises to 15.2 million.

More impressive than that, the Sunday, October 14 outing scored a 5.8 rating among adults 18-49. It's higher than any entertainment programs this fall, surpassing "Modern Family" season 4 premiere that pulled a 5.5 rating.

Charlie Collier, president of AMC, states when announcing the horror series' achievement, "Thank you to the fans for making 'The Walking Dead' such a tremendous success. We are honored and humbled that television's largest adult audience resides on AMC. So many people on both sides of the camera worked tirelessly on this project, and I thank and congratulate each of them for their amazing contribution."

The first episode of the season opened with bloody and action-packed scenes as the survivors killed the walkers. Explaining their reason to present such story, executive producer Robert Kirkman said, "Going back and doing quieter stories with less zombies just didn't seem like the right move. So we decided to plow ahead and make things a little more high octane."

"The Walking Dead" airs every Sunday at 9 P.M. ET on AMC. Since the network has been in a dispute with DISH, the zombie apocalypse show no longer plays on the satellite broadcaster.
